Six Freedoms of the First Amendment

 Black Lives Matter Movement

The First Amendment is essential to have because it synopsizes the rights of US citizens. There are six freedoms within the first amendment; freedom of speech, religion, press, assembly, and petition. The First Amendment is when Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof, or abridging the freedom of speech, or the press or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances. A great example of this would be the Black Lives Matter Movement. It’s a social movement that is fighting against racial injustice, police brutality. This movement uses the first amendment in all six freedoms. The first case that ever became controversial and rose concerns was in 2014, the Micheal Brown case. This has started the awareness of the Black Lives Matter Movement. Another example of the Black Lives Matter Movement was recent, in 2020. That’s when George Floyd died due to police brutality. This case went globally known for what happened to George Floyd. The Black Lives Matter Movement boomed, there were protests, writing to local government officials, signing positions, news media, learning more about the history of black people, and helping out black-owned businesses. Sure, there were some riots but it wasn’t all the protests, some might say undercover police started a lot of the riots. The First Amendment covers free speech, press, religion, assembly, and petition but it doesn’t cover violating the property of others.
